If you haven’t tried Vietnamese egg coffee, or ca phe trung, it could make you will be pleasantly surprised, especially if you love coffee and love dessert. The most common place to find egg coffee is in Hanoi, in the north of Vietnam. Here are our favourite picks for egg coffee Hanoi…

What is Vietnamese Egg Coffee?

Think coffee with sugar, sweetened condensed milk with egg yolks whisked in. It might be hard to imagine, but strangely enough the egg yolks actually start tasting like soft and creamy meringue in your coffee, even though meringue is made of egg whites… somehow it just works?!

Giang Cafe

When it comes to egg coffee in Hanoi, Giang Cafe is the first place that comes to mind. Giang Cafe serve arguably the best egg coffee in Hanoi. Giang Cafe was founded in 1946 by Mr Nguyen Giang, who created egg coffee when milk was scarce, replacing the milk with the egg yolk. Having egg coffee at Giang Cafe is an experience in itself. You will only see a sign above a small alleyway, which you need to walk down to the end where the cafe will open up.

Cafe Pho Co

There’s something special about walking into a normal looking silk store, then walking further with still no sign of a coffee shop then walking upstairs to a coffee shop that suddenly opens up to have this stunning view over Hoan Kiem Lake. It’s almost just a bonus that they also happen to do excellent egg coffee. Such a great cafe experience in Hanoi.

Cafe Lam

One of the oldest cafes in Hanoi, Cafe Lam serve delicious egg coffee. A small, unassuming cafe, here you will get an authentic Hanoi cafe experience. Cafe Lam also do great Vietnamese iced coffee, or ca phe sua da.

Cafe Tuan

Cafe Tuan is a very simple little cafe right next to Giang Cafe. Here you can sit on little stools with your delicious egg coffee and watch daily life and traffic go by.
