Vietnam to hold two of the World's most prestigious "Hidden Gems"
Two of Central Vietnam’s most iconic destinations—Hoi An and Da Nang—have just earned global recognition as the most lively and attractive “hidden gem cities”, according to Travel + Leisure. The ranking reinforces their growing status on the international travel map.

A Global Ranking Built on Experience Value
On April 1, the leading U.S.-based travel magazine released its list of the world’s top “hidden gem cities”—destinations that offer rich, immersive experiences while remaining relatively under-the-radar. Out of 23 global locations evaluated, Hoi An claimed the #1 spot, while Da Nang followed closely at #2.
The ranking was based on key factors including travel costs, weather conditions, and what the publication calls “experience density”—essentially how much a destination offers within a compact, easily explorable space.
With a score of 92.96, Hoi An stood out for delivering a high concentration of cultural, culinary, and visual experiences within a walkable setting.
Hoi An – A Living Heritage Experience
According to Travel + Leisure, Hoi An is more than just a well-preserved ancient town—it’s a “living heritage,” where history blends seamlessly into everyday life.
The Old Town is known for its lantern-lit streets, centuries-old architecture, and a unique fusion of Eastern and Western influences. Weathered rooftops, colorful facades, and riverside views create a timeless atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and vibrant.

What makes Hoi An especially appealing is its accessibility. Most attractions, cafés, restaurants, and artisan shops are within walking distance, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace.
Food is also a major highlight. Local specialties like bánh mì, cao lầu, white rose dumplings, and bao buns form a seamless culinary journey that reflects the city’s identity.
Taylor McIntyre, an image editor at the magazine, described Hoi An as “a window into the past,” noting its emotional resonance and ability to evoke a strong sense of memory and connection.
Da Nang – A Seamless Coastal Extension
Just a short distance away, Da Nang complements Hoi An with a completely different energy. The coastal city offers a modern beach lifestyle, wide boulevards, and easy access to nature.

The seamless connectivity between the two destinations is a major advantage. Travelers can effortlessly move from Hoi An’s heritage charm to Da Nang’s oceanfront relaxation, creating a balanced itinerary that blends culture, nature, and urban comfort.
A Strong Signal for Vietnam’s Tourism Growth
Beyond Vietnam, the list also featured destinations like Bruges (Belgium), Essaouira and Chefchaouen (Morocco), Calabria (Italy), Paros (Greece), Cambridge (UK), Belgrade (Serbia), and Cascais (Portugal).
Industry experts suggest that having both Hoi An and Da Nang at the top of the ranking is more than just recognition—it’s a strategic opportunity. With Travel + Leisure holding strong influence in North American markets, this visibility could significantly boost international arrivals.
Founded in 1971 and part of Dotdash Meredith, Travel + Leisure is one of the world’s most influential travel publications, known for shaping global travel trends through its rankings and editorial insights.
The dual recognition of Hoi An and Da Nang highlights a compelling travel narrative: one destination rooted in history and cultural depth, the other offering modern coastal energy. Together, they create a travel experience that feels both intimate and expansive—exactly what today’s global travelers are looking for.
